Al M. is back on the mat. The Hall of Fame coach and Avail Senior Living resident has returned to Cleveland High School as the Raiders’ Assistant Coach, bringing 41 years of experience back to a program he helped shape.
Al began his coaching career with the Highland Park Club and spent decades building the Raiders Wrestling Team — a run that made him one of the most recognized figures in Cleveland, TN, high school athletics. After stepping away from coaching, he returned to the sidelines when Head Coach Josh Bosken needed additional support. At 75, Al guides practices, offers tips during matches, and shares knowledge that only comes from a career spent on the mat.
What Decades of Coaching Look Like in Practice
Al’s return isn’t ceremonial. He’s stayed an active presence during practices — watching athletes, correcting technique, and drawing on 41 years of pattern recognition that no first-year coach can replicate. His perspective covers not just the mechanics of the sport but also how to reach athletes, build a program, and develop competitors who think on their feet.
That depth of experience is exactly what Head Coach Josh Bosken was looking for when he reached out. For the Raiders, having Al back on the sideline means access to a resource most programs never get — a coach who has seen everything and is still willing to show up.
Why Experience Matters in Youth Athletics
Coaching isn’t just about knowing the right moves. It’s about reading a room, knowing when to push and when to pull back, and understanding what motivates a 16-year-old who’s wrestling at 6 a.m. before school. Al brings all of that. The Raiders aren’t just gaining an assistant — they’re gaining access to a coaching philosophy built over four decades.
“Al stepping onto the mat again is about giving students a chance to learn from years of experience,” said Chris Beckstrand, Owner and Executive Director of Avail Senior Living. “Seeing him interact with the team shows how much he enjoys being part of their growth.”
Active Senior Living Looks Different for Everyone
Active aging doesn’t follow a single script, and Al’s continued involvement in athletics proves that. For many residents, staying active means taking fitness classes or going on group outings. For Al, it means loading into the Avail van and heading to the high school several days a week to coach.

At Avail Senior Living in Cleveland, TN, residents have access to assisted living and memory care that supports daily routines while leaving room for the things that matter most to each individual. For Al, that means the wrestling mat. For another resident, it might look entirely different.
Passion and Knowledge Don’t Expire
Al’s return to Cleveland High School shows what’s possible when older adults stay connected to the things that shaped them — and when the people around them make space for that to happen.
At 75, Al isn’t winding down. He’s guiding practices, mentoring athletes, and contributing to a team with the same focus he brought to the mat decades ago.
